ABOUT IAN
Upon leaving Secondary School at aged 16, Ian went straight into professional football by signing a two year Apprenticeship contract with Barnsley FC. Following his release from Barnsley, Ian was invited for trials at Sheffield Wednesday FC. A successful one month trial period ended with Ian signing his first Professional contract just before his 19th birthday. Under the guidance of team manager Howard Wilkinson, Ian made his 1st team debut just 8 months later….a 2-0 home victory over Aston Villa!

At the start of the following season (1986/7), Ian was establishing himself as a starting centre back for the 1st division club (pre-premiership). In September ’96 Ian received his first England U21 ‘cap’ against Sweden, which was quickly followed by his 2nd (Nov ’96) against Yugoslavia.

In February ’97, Ian’s meteoric rise came to a crunching halt when in a 4th round F.A. Cup replay he suffered a double compound fracture of his right leg. Described by some at the time, as the worst leg break in football history and ‘something one might observe following a motorcycle accident’ as explained by his surgeon. Ian’s right tibia was shattered in seven places!

A long, arduous and often frustrating rehabilitation period of two years followed before Ian would make a return to the game. Unable to meet the high speed and physical demands of top flight play; Ian was transferred to Grimsby Town FC (4th division) in Jan ‘90. Despite signing a two year deal, Ian’s playing time was limited due to on-going injury problems and so, at the end of his two year stint at Grimsby, Ian retired as a Professional player aged just 26yrs.

Coaching seemed the logical career move and so Ian began coaching for the Football in the Community program at Grimsby Town. After 2yrs as Community Officer, Ian became Head of Youth Development at Grimsby Town in 1995.

With the demise of the Football League – ITV Digital contract in 2001 many clubs suffered financial hardship and in May 2002, after 7 yrs in the position, Ian’s contract was not re-newed at Grimsby Town.

In 2003 Ian took up a position as Head Coach of the Greater
